Hartbeespoort (fondly known as HARTIES) is one of those cool places to visit and enjoy, especially when you stay in Johannesburg and Pretoria and you are looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city. Also, for those visiting the Gauteng province, it’s a great surprise to be in Hartbeespoort, because it’s a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery and the dam away from the noise.
My partner and I have been to Hartbeespoort a couple of times together, and we have loved it every single time. It started with the boat, when we did an overnight stay on the water on a catamaran. From that moment on, we proper fell in love with Hartbeespoort, and it’s one of the places that we escape to when we just need to get out of the city and just refresh.

Picnic by Hartbeespoort Dam
We found a cozy place in Hartbeespoort called Cosy Kosmos that had a beautiful view by the dam (and of the dam), and while we were there, we had a thought of having a picnic right next to the dam.
We were driving the Isuzu MUX at the time, and it was perfect, because we had always talked about having a picnic at the back of a 4×4 and it was finally happening. After packing our picnic basket, we headed out to the dam, paid about R60 to get in and found our perfect spot right next to the water.
To this day, it remains one of the best things that we have done as a couple , that I highly recommend, and one of the most relaxing.
And the best part, is that it costs next to nothing . . . outside of your picnic supplies.
Overnight Stay on a Catamaran in Hartbeespoort Dam
If you love water like we do, this romantic date idea for couples is something that you will probably love.
We both have done the boat cruise on the dam, that last for about an hour, but when we heard that we could actually spend the night on a catamaran, it was definitely something we knew we had to do.
Once we made the decision to do it, we picked our day, which was a Saturday and took our drive to Harties. We parked our car at Boaters World and they fetched us on a speed boat . . . which was also a great experience.
And when we got to the Catamaran . . . we were excited to do the sunset boat cruise. The sunset cruise was beautiful, but it was nothing compared to spending the night on a boat on the dam.
It was a magical experience and very romantic.
We had a braai and enjoyed it under the stars by the deck! Would highly recommend.

Lion and Safari Park Self Drive Tour in Hartbeespoort
If you are a lover of animals, then you definitely need to check out the Lion and Safari park self drive tour. There is no guide for this, so you can go with your partner, and enjoy the lions, cheetahs and wild dog enclosures. There are also other animals that you can enjoy, and the best thing about the self drive is that you can get really close to the animals (as long as you do it carefully and safely).
You can take your time with it, as you can decide how long you want to be there for, and how much time you are allocating for each enclosure.
Also, the views are magnificent . . . the safari park is nestled right by the Magaliesberg mountains.
You can also do a guided tour at the park. For this, you would be on a safari truck to see the animals, take stunning pictures of them and enjoy the 600 hectare area.
Aerial Cable Way Car Ride in Hartbeespoort
If you are looking for things to do in Hartbeespoort with your partner, you definitely should consider doing the Aerial Cable Car Ride. The paramic views of the Magaliesberg mountains are to die for. You also get to see the Hartbees Dam.
Not to mention the great romantic memory that you would be creating with your partner. Best of all, you can end the trip by enjoying a meal at one of the retsaurants at the top of the mountain, and I am sure you can agree that few restaurant experiences can top this.
Hot Air Balloon at Hartbeespoort
Hot air balloon is definitely one of the most romantic things to do with your partner. Once in the balloon, the most natural thing is to cozy up to your partner, and that by itself is very romantic.
You can enjoy the most beautiful views of Hartbeespoort, as well as beautiful views of the Magalies Ridge and valley.
This experience is definitely one that creates great memories while you enjoy an unforgettable experience. Not only will you be enjoying this, but you will be sharing this experience with your partner, which can only bring you closer together.
Hartbeespoort Elephant Sanctuary
If you love elephants, or if you are looking for an amazing experience, then the Hartbeespoort Elephant Sanctuary is something you should consider doing.
This unique experience is one for the books, as you get to be in contact with the elephants. You come face to face with them, and you get to feed them while you touch their skins and get really close to their trunks.
Not only do you get to feed them, you get to walk with them in super proximity, in their habitat, and this is a must do activity. the experience of a lifetime, not to mention how amazing it will look on the gram.
