WhiskyShop: Our Whisky Tasting Experience in Fourways, Johannesburg

August is my birthday month, and my partner has been looking for things for us to do . . . and she’s also been actively looking for things that can make my birthday special and memorable, which warms my heart to no end.

So on Saturday (3 days before my birthday which was on the 9th of August), she just told me that we are going somewhere and that I should get ready. I was anxious because I literally had no clue where she was taking me to, but I tried to keep an open mind.

So off we went, got on the free way and ended up in Fourways, at the WhiskyShop, at the Gantry Lifestyle Centre in Fourways.

When we got to the WhiskyShop, I then understood that we were going to be doing some whisky tasting, something that I had never done before. So I was excited, and I had no idea what to expect. Whisky Shop is a boutique whisky tasting spot in Fourways, and bookings are essential!

When we got there, there was a group doing their tasting inside, and we opted to sit outside, and they set up for us. We were supposed to do 6 whiskeys, from different parts of the world. So, we did a South African one, an American one, A Japanese one, an Irish one, and an Indian one. We did the following whiskies: Toor Grain Whisky, Akashi, Woodford Reserve, Sanmi Ittai, The Pogues and Paul John.

We learned a bit more about whisky, how sophisticated of a drink it can be. We learned that just like wine, it can be twirled and smelled before drinking it, giving it a much needed feminine side.

The few whiskeys that I have had so far would be Jack Daniels, Jameson and Johnny Walker, so it was quite interesting to experiencing other whisky scents and tastes, given that both bae and I are not huge whisky drinkers.

It was interesting hearing about whisky, how it is made, the different whiskeys from different countries and just being able to know the scent of the whisky and determine what is in it.

WhiskyShop Fourways: Final Thoughts

It’s safe to say that bae and I enjoyed our first whisky tasting experience. Our host was welcoming and knowledgeable, so it was a pleasant experience.

It was quite a different experience for the both of us, because we drink whisky when it’s in a cocktail, but we are both not drinkers of it neat/straight.

Would we do whisky tasting again? I think not, it was nice to do something different, a bit outside our comforrt zone.

Would we recommend it? Yes, especially for people who enjoy their whisky.
