Solo Restaurant in Sandton

Our Dining Experience at Solo Restaurant in Sandton

As we have all established that the Lover and I are “Lovers of nice things”, so there was absolutely no way that we would not try out a fine dining experience at Solo Restaurant. We love that it is a brain child of two phenomenal South Africans (Tumelo Maepa and Hlompho Chauke) and that made it extra exciting as we love supporting local/ our very own.

Another compelling reason of course, is the beautiful wine cellar  . . . yes the one that everyone has to take a picture on. Because let’s face it, without that pic, were you even there? And having seen this on so many Instagram posts, it was time for us to check it out.

Solo Restaurant is situated in the North, in the center of South Africa’s business hub in Sandton, Africa’s richest square mile, in the 24 Central complex.

Solo Restaurant: First Impressions

At first glance you fall in love with the unique contemporary setup, with its dark furniture finishes which just sets the romantic tone. It’s a beautiful restaurant, the decor is stunning and ambiance was just as great!

The thing about this beautiful restaurant is that people dress to the nines when going there, we certainly tried to do the same. We didn’t have a reservation, which was a miracle that we managed to get a table. Solo was packed , and the bougee crowd was already there in full force, dressed to the nines, snapping those Instagram shots, eating oysters, sipping on some wine and enjoying the vibe.

The vibe was beautiful, people genuinely looked like they were having a great time, and we were excited to fully experience it.

Solo Restaurant: Food & Drinks

Solo RestaurantWe were escorted to our table and the waiter politely introduced himself and handed us their drinks menu. I was in the mood for wine, so I ordered a glass of merlot and my partner had a cocktail. We were ready to order our main meal and I was definitely in the mood for a good steak. I went with the sirloin steak, mash potato and spinach and my partner ordered the lamb chops with mash and vegetables.

As we were enjoying our drinks and awaiting the food, we (more me than Baby) took the opportunity to capture some photos by the infamous wine cellar alley, which really is the ultimate spot for your Instagram stills and reels. That Solo’s statement wine cellar, is seriously a spot that is super in demand, as everyone wants a picture on it.

The food was ready not long after we ordered and it looked very presentable. We dug right in . . . and as we ate and chatted away, it was time for another glass of wine and another cocktail. My sirloin steak was great, tender and juicy, exactly the way I like it. Didn’t enjoy the spinach as much, but overall the meal was lovely. Had some lamb chops from my partner, and they also tasted really good.

Solo Restaurant: Service

The waiter was very attentive to us the entire time, made sure we got everything we needed and was re-filling my wine glass every single time it looked low. The general ambience at the restaurant was romantic with very mild music that allowed us to enjoy a conversation without having to shout.

We never felt “abandoned” or forgotten, which made our experience a pleasant one.

Final Thoughts

Our experience at Solo Restaurant was a pleasant one. We were thoroughly delighted with Solo and will most definitely be visiting again.

We totally loved the vibe, and finally understood why it’s one of the popular spots in Johannesburg right now. The service was also really good, our waiter was friendly and willing to assist during our entire experience.

The food is great, but their prices are a bit on the steep side, so make sure you have a budget when you visit Solo. Their portion sizes are also not on the generous side.

Overall, a great experience that I would totally recommend.
