As Hartbeespoort Dam is about 45 minutes from Johannesburg, make sure that you leave JHB or Pretoria early enough, to give yourself enough time for your picnic, and be able to drive back before it’s super late.
For us, this wasn’t an issue, as we had decided to spend some time in Hartbeespoort, exploring the place and just relaxing, so we didn’t have to drive back late or in a rush.
#2. Pack a delicious picnic basket
What’s a picnic without delicious food to share with your partner?
For your picnic, make sure that you pack a basket with your favourite snacks, food and drinks. On our one, we had Simba chips, we had a full platter that had grapes, different cheeses, strawberries, blueberries, crackers and chocolate.
And of course, we had packed our favourite bottle of champagne, to wash down the delicious munchies and do a toast or two.
#3. Choose the perfect spot
Hartbeespoort Dam is beautiful, which gives you an option of great spots to choose from.
We wanted a spot that was close to the water, that was secluded and very romantic, and we managed to get one.

#4. Bring a blanket
A soft blanket is essential for a romantic picnic, for us we went even further by choosing a sentimental one for us.
We had our picnic right on the 4×4 that we drove in, so the entire setup was on the bakkie. we just spread our beautiful blankie, set up our picnic and enjoyed ourselves. Spread it out on the grass and enjoy a leisurely meal together.
#5. Don’t forget the music
Music can add another level of romance to your picnic, so make sure that you prioritize it.
We are talking romantic Rnb or neo soul type of setup, where you are still able to enjoy great conversation with your partner.
For this, we packed our compact JBL bluetooth speaker, and it worked perfectly.
#6. Plan some activities
Besides enjoying the picnic with your partner, you can also do more than just the picnic.
For example, you can choose to bring a game or two to enjoy with your partner.
Or you can go for a short stroll, or decide to split your time between the picnic and going on a boat ride. It’s entirely up to you what you choose to do, just make sure you make it count.
