Lesbian Movies on Netflix that You Can Watch Right Now
We love movies . . . and we love Netflix, so it’s a no brainer that some of our weekends are spent just watching lesbian movies or series. We don’t only watch lesbian movies on Netflix, sometimes we just watch great shows, movies and series.
It certainly beats having to drive out to somewhere, given how expensive petrol and everything else is. We love what Netflix is doing, and we love seeing movies that we can identify with, and that’s the reason why I have compiled this list of movies, some of which I am yet to watch and some that I have watched already.
I remember watching If These Walls Could Talk years ago with Ellen Degeneres and Angie Stone, and loved it soo much. I remember it taking me through a journey as the story started in the stone age where being a lesbian was looked at as a sin and one had to hide themselves and pretended to be friends with their lover, and advancing to where women could be free to be together and even go through the journey of having a child together. And from that moment on, I was hooked.
And who can forget the L Word? It literally changed everything for me (and people like me).
As lesbian and queer women. It’s beautiful being able to see ourselves represented in the media, and without further ado, here are some Lesbian Movies on Netflix that you should check out:
The Half of It
In this Netflix lesbian movie The Half of It, Ellie ghostwrites for other students at her school, to help financially at home. Her life completely changes when she starts writing love letters for this guy named Paul who is in love with his crush, Aster. Things start getting sticky when she meets Aster and starts falling for her, too.
The Prom
In this Netflix lesbian movie The Prom, we are introduced to Emma, a high school student who is banned from going to the prom because she wants to go with her girlfriend. Emma then gets the Broadway stars help her with her problem so she can go to prom. If you are into musicals, you can check this one out.
Duck Butter
Duck Butter is a lesbian movie on Netflix about two women that are dissatisfied with the level of lying, cheating and dishonesty that they see in relationships. They meet in a bar and decide that they want to do things differently, by deciding to go full on into a relationship together, by spending 24 hrs together. This decision takes them to new heights.
Ride or Die
In this lesbian movie Ride or Die, Rei has been in love with her friend for years and she will do anything for her friend. In the movie, she ends up killing her abusive husband to protect her, which lands them in hot water. They then run away to escape facing the law and end up catching feelings for each other during their road trip.
Tig
Tig is not a lesbian movie, but more a documentary on the life of Tig Notaro, after losing her mother suddenly and then finding out that she has bilateral breast cancer. This heartfelt documentary takes viewers into the world of comedian Tig Notaro, and how she turned her pain into dope comedy lines and the support that she got during that difficult and devastating time.
Elisa and Marcela
Elisa and Marcela is a lesbian movie on Netflix that is based on a true story, it chronicles a love story soo powerful that it had to be told. The movie takes us on a journey of one of the most important love stories in the history of the LGBTQ movement in Spain. It tells the forbidden love story of Elisa and Marcela, their friendship to when they eventually fell in love with each other. It is set back in 1901, when they had to keep their relationship a secret, to when Elisa takes the identity of a man in order to marry her lover Marcela. A first in Spanish history where two women got married to each other.
A Valley of a Thousand Hills
The Valley of a Thousand Hills is an LGBTQ movie about two women who face cultural challenges and their families to be together.
In the movie . . . we watch Nosipho (played by Mandisa Vilakazi) who comes from a conservative village with a strict father and she has to choose between being her true self or being the perfect Zulu daughter who makes her father proud.
