Best Spicy and Saucy Chicken Feet Recipe

How to Cook Spicy and Saucy Chicken Feet

South Africans love chicken feet  . . . and yes they may not have a lot of meat on them, but when cooked well they just taste super good.

When I crave chicken feet, I like to buy them clean already, normally I will buy them from Pic n Pay or anywhere where they clean them.

If they still have the horrible outside skin, you just need to boil some water, soak them in that water for a good 15 minutes or so, and the skin will come easily after that.

Once cleaned up, cut the nails off. You want to make sure the chicken feet are nice and clean, so make sure you wash them thoroughy before cooking.

Now the fun part . . . cooking them!

Chicken Feet Ingredients

  • About 3 tbsp of  oil (Depends on how much you are cooking)
  • 1 medium-sized onion (diced/finely chopped)
  • 1 green pepper
  • Some Chilli
  • 1 tsp of crushed ginger & garlic
  • 2 tbsp chicken Spice (you can choose Robertson chicken spice or sometimes I use chicken spice from Westpack). Use what you have /what you prefer
  • 300 grams chicken feet
  • Finely chopped1 cup frozen mixed vegetables
  • 375 ml (1 ½) cups hot water

Chicken Feet: How to Cook Them

  • Start by frying the onion in the oil with medium heat for a bit, then add in the chicken feet. Add the ginger & garlic, 1 tablespoon of Chicken Spice, green pepper and the chilli.
  • Fry the mix that you have just added together with the chicken feet. You can also add some tomato here if you like
  • Then add some water with the chicken stock . . . and bring it to boil. Once it sarts boiling, reduce the heat back to medium heat . . . and let it simmer. This is the part where the chicken feet get tender and flavourful, and the sauce gets a little thicker.
  • After a few minutes, your food will be ready. Switch off the stove and let it rest for a few minutes . . . then it will be ready to eat. Simply sere it with pap!

I know South Africans love chicken feet, but I honestly didn’t know that they are also enjoyed in Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine, Romania, Moldova, Italy, Jamaica, South Africa, Peru, and Mexico. Also, Americans are starting to enjoy them a bit more which is great. . . it’s definitely something they won’t regret.
