7 Ways to Save Money on Your Next Trip

Do you love to travel, but don’t have money lying around waiting for you to go on your next trip?

Worry not, it is still possible for you to ravel, explore the places that you want to. It just takes some planning on your end, and of course saving money where you can.

Here are :

7  Ways  to Help Save Some Cash while you Travel

Prioritize what you want to do with your money

When you travel, what are you looking forward to the most? Do you want to stay at the grandest hotels? Do you like dining at the finest restaurants? Do you like to collect the most expensive souvenirs on your travels?

For us personally, we love the experience of new places. We love experiencing what makes the place special, we love eating local/popular foods, we love doing fun activities and we just love creating great memories.

And creating memories for us does not mean expensive, if anything we are budget hunters. If we can have fun doing something affordable, that’s exactly what we will settle for. If we want to do something but it becomes too expensive for us to do, we simply skip it and channel the money somewhere else.

When choosing a place to visit, opt for a place where you already have friends or family

If you have friends or family in a city that you want to visit, that’s an added bonus. Not only will it help you navigate that city, you get to save on accommodation costs as well as food.

Having a braai with friends definitely beats having to go out to a restaurant, and it will be kinder on your pocket. Not to mention the fact that you will also be saving money on drinks.

Be on the lookout for cheaper flights

Depending on where you are going, flights can be expensive, so it is very important to look for cheaper flights.

If you are going on an overseas trip, you may have to consider a flight that comes with a layover, than a flight that flies straight to the country that you are visiting.

Back in 2018 when I travelled to Thailand, we had a layover of a couple of hours. The only regret I had with that layover is the fact that we din’t explore Abhu Dhabi, but now I know how to make the best of it. Layovers may be a drag at times, but if you get to experience that city/country for those few hours, or at least experience the food, it makes it a bit more fun and more worthwhile.

Explore Cheap Accommodation

If you are not visiting friends or staying with family, one of the best ways to save money is to lookup cheap air bnbs, or backpackers or cheap hostels.

With this route you want to make sure that you do your research, so you can find places that are cheap, and also very safe.

Be Smart With Food

Consider packing snacks for your trips, just this tip alone will save you a lot of money.

Instead of eating out at restaurants, you may want to do grocery shopping and have the option to cook the food yourself.

This will save you money, and coupled with your snacks that you have packed, you won’t have to spend any more money on that, unless you are looking to try out different snacks that aren’t available back home.

Use the right credit card

Are you using a credit card that gives you travel points, rewards or cashback? Do your research before you travel  . . . you can get points for your flights, or the accommodation that you book.

If you are a regular traveller, the points/rewards add up pretty fast, saving you even more money.

Lastly, not everything has to cost money

Whatever destination you are going to, there are free things that you can do without spending a cent. When we did Germany, and Switzerland back in 2014, we were actively looking for things to do on a budget or for free, because we didn’t have money.

We ended up doing cathedrals, parks, we did a picnic, we ended up at the Fifa headquarters in Switzerland and so much more. We did so many things on a budget and it still felt like we were on a holiday.

So there you have it! as you plan your next trip, let us know what is your next destination on your bucketlist?
