A Day at Prison Break Market on a Sunday
Visiting The Prison Break Market in Glenferness (Midrand) is an absolute must, that is if you love markets, good food and a great vibe. Oh . . . did I mention the outdoors?
If you are looking for a lazy Sunday, where you can relax with good company and just experience something a little different to your usual, then this market is something to consider visiting. There is literally everything you need to have an amazing time . . . for one it feels like you are not in Johannesburg. From a gin tasting experience, private photo sessions, new foods to try out and painting sessions, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The Prison Break Market – First Impression
Having a bit of experience with markets, having done the Fourways Farmers Market in Modderfontein, we knew we didn’t want to arrive there too early or too late, late because we didn’t want to struggle too much in finding a place to relax and enjoy the vibe and our food.
When we arrived, it was already pretty packed, and we could tell the vibe right off the bat. There were a lot of people, and like us, seemed excited to be there. Unlike most markets that we have been to, this market had different buildings/sheds that offered different vendors and things.
There’s a total of 7 sheds at Prison Break Market, which was very nice because different people would be interested in different vendors in the different sheds. More about the different sheds and what they offer later.
Our Experience at The Prison Break Market
As soon as we arrived, we wanted to shoot a picture or two, just to have pictures for this memorable experience. And ofcourse, we wanted a spot where we could enjoy our food and drinks.
But before then, we walked around the market, checked out the different stalls and the different things that we could buy, and just took in the vibe, and then it was time to find a spot to chill.
We opted to buy a bucket of drinks (ciders), and ordered some prawns and sushi to share. This was the easy part.
The difficult part was finding a spot to relax and take in our experience . . . as all the spots and tables were taken. However, we managed to get a table as a group of friends were leaving, and then it was game on.
The vibe was just beautiful, filled with chatter of happy people and music. It was exactly what we needed for a relaxing afternoon.

The Sheds at Prison Break Market
The different sheds at the market offer unique vendors that offer exciting unique experiences. Here is what you can expect from the different ones:
The Yard Eatery – this is a spot for food and drink stalls that offer a beautiful mix of flavors and drinking experiences.
Star Foods – This space is for the locally sourced products that you get from the food artisans.
Crafters Shed – This space is all about creativity and the people that manufacture their goods.
Clay Café – This space is for people who are interested in doing ceramic painting while enjoying a great meal.
Dreambox – This is a live pop-up experience
San Quentin Events – This is an events venue that can be booked for private and public functions.
The Pour House – The Noble Experiment, The Wine & Spirit Library, and Wildebeer Brewing Co.
Final Thoughts
In our books . . . the Prison Break Market is a gem, a great place to unwind and have an amazing time. It’s a great place to enjoy with friends, or your partner, or with your family if you have one.
I also loved that it is a cashless zone . . . all stalls are equipped with payment machines, eliminating the need to carry huge sums of money, which I imagine puts criminals off.
Would we recommend it? Absoltely YES . . . we enjoyed it so much , we will be going back to explore more sheds!
The Prison Break Market is located at Glenferness, Midrand Johannesburg.

You can just go with your friends, or whoever you want to take. We didn’t have an appointment either, we just rocked up and had a great time.
